The primary Light Rail Transit (LRT) being built from Mesa, through Tempe, and up to Northwest Phoenix is planned to be 20 miles long, estimated to provide 27,000 rider-trips a day, and begin operating in December of 2008. An expansion of 27.7 miles has been approved and when completed the LRT will have the capacity to transport 15,000 people per hour.
The Light Rail Transit costs $65 million per mile constructed.
